Darren Kohne was cut from his high school basketball team, at one of the most prestigious schools in Ohio who arguably had the most successful 4-year basketball stint of any school in the Toledo area over the past 50 years. (102-11 varsity record with 2 state runner-ups at the Division I level and sent 10 players to NCAA Division I scholarships from those teams). He was told he would never play college basketball nor coach at the collegiate level by many whom he sought mentorship from, as those were his two main life goals as a teen. Darren’s resilience however, after a strong AAU season led him to multiple college opportunities where he went on to play at Benedictine University in Lisle, IL, ultimately winning the NIIC Conference Championship and earning a bid to the NCAA Division III tournament his freshman year. Later Darren became the 2nd youngest NCAA Division I coach in the country and followed that up with a 14-year coaching career at that level and 6+ years serving in the NBA. Kohne has also provided full collegiate scholarships for 22 individuals to date from the NW Ohio area as just one of many ways he gives back to his roots. Darren’s “Undefeated Spirit” is what led him to such self-made success.
